John, the eldest of six children was born on 3 July, 1935. He was predeceased by his parents, Aubrey Clarence and Violet Cecelia Catherine (nee Russell) and his brother, Donald.

He is survived by his wife, Roslyn, his sons, Brendan and wife Maryanne, Damian and Suzi, five beloved grandchildren, Jeremy and Aimee, Jack and Libby, Samantha ‘Sami’, Tom and Darcy, two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Annabelle and four sisters, Anne, Leila, Veronica and Elizabeth.

A legend and inspiration to so many John had a lifetime affiliation with the high country. He began riding in the mountains as a small boy, he had snow leases in the region and he continued his passion for the mountains throughout over 52 years running Reynella with Roslyn by his side.

He was full to the brim with knowledge and love for the mountains in which he rode. John will be missed and fondly remembered by the many he shared his beloved mountains with, his community of family, friends, professionals and acquaintances spanning across globe.

The end of an era at Reynella

Sadly the passing of John represents the end of an era for Reynella, with the rides no longer operating.

For 52 years Roslyn & John rode with guests through the country that inspired Banjo Patterson’s “The Man from Snowy River”. Guests came from far and wide to ride the land of mountain horsemen, brumbies, wildflowers and alpine wilderness with Reynella being the original operator in the area.
Their horseback safaris offered a wilderness experience that guests would remember forever and they often came back again and again. The many friendships made over this time is testament to the wonderful experiences of visitors to Reynella.

The rides were a wonderful opportunity to explore mountain plains, see brumbies up close and relax around a roaring campfire in the evenings. With willing horses and “mountain” equipment as well as hearty mountain food – hot breakfasts, picnic lunches and delicious dinners, roomy tents and comfortable mattresses Reynella Rides provided guests with friendly and welcoming hospitality in the mountains.
